Two homers not enough as Nevada falls at Portland

Three-game series at Oregon next

RENO, Nev. – Despite home runs from seniors Dillan Shrum and Marco Valenzuela, Nevada (0-3) lost its series finale at Portland (3-0) on Sunday afternoon 6-4. Shane O'Malley made his first start in the Silver & Blue and tossed five innings, allowing only two earned runs.

Nevada will return to the state of Oregon next weekend to battle the Ducks in a three-game series. The series will kick off Friday at 4 p.m. with the final two games occurring on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The game began with a bang, as Shrum blasted his second homer of the year in the first frame to put three runs on the board for the Wolf Pack. He is batting .284 on the year with four RBI thanks in part to his solo shot in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.

The Pilots responded back with two runs of its own in the first, and an error in the second inning tacked on two more runs to give them a 4-3 lead. O'Malley pitched nearly flawlessly the next three innings, including a 1-2-3 fifth to end his outing, the longest by a Pack pitcher this year.

Valenzuela recorded his first hit of the year in a big way, blasting a solo shot with a full count in the fifth inning to tie the game at four runs.

Jake Fenn came into the game in the sixth and finished with 1.1 innings pitched, but surrendered the final two runs of the game and suffered the loss. Nevada used six pitchers on the day, including four who pitched a perfect 1.2 innings to close the game.

Next weekend's series will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 network, as well as audio on the TuneIn app and CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
