RENO, Nev. – Sophomore Owen Sharts put together one of the best outings of his career against the Ducks, but Nevada (0-4) fell due to a late rally by Oregon (1-4) on Friday night. The Ducks scored three runs in the final two frames to take the contest 3-2.
Sharts finished the night with six innings pitched, only allowing two hits, two walks and tying his career-high with eight strikeouts. In 10.1 innings this season, he has tallied 16 punchouts.
The contest was scoreless through the first three-frames until Nevada put together a big fourth inning where they scored their only two runs of the game. It began with junior Joshua Zamora reaching on a Duck fielding error, and then moving to second thanks to a Dillan Shrum single. Tyler Bosetti laid down a successful sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position, and senior Wyatt Tilley brought Zamora home with his first hit of the ballgame.
Freshman Brady Hormel followed Tilley by registering his first-career RBI, blasting a sacrifice fly that allowed Shrum to score.
Following Sharts' exit after six innings, Jake Fenn pitched the best inning of his career, tying a career-high two strikeouts and a shutout seventh inning out of the Nevada bullpen.
The Ducks came out firing in the eighth, as Nevada used four pitchers to get three outs but not before a two-out single by Aaron Zavala drove in two runs to tie the ballgame. The ninth inning saw a walkoff single by Kenyon Yovan, who went a game-best 3-for-4.
Tomorrow's contest will begin at 1 p.m. as Nevada will look to even the series with the Ducks. The game will be livestreamed on Pac-12+ with audio on the TuneIn app and on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM.
