LINCOLN, Neb. – With six seconds on the clock in a tie game, Nevada sophomore
Grant Sherfield knocked down a critical 3-pointer that pushed the Wolf Pack past Nebraska, 69-66, Thursday afternoon.
Sherfield's game-winner moved Nevada to 2-0 in the opening week of the 2020-21 season after the Wolf Pack also defeated North Dakota State on Wednesday.
Nevada needed a come-from-behind effort in order to score a victory over the Cornhuskers as the team found itself trailing by 10 with under 10 minutes to play in the game. The Wolf Pack was able to quickly get back in the mix after a 6-0 run, capped off by a layup by
Robby Robinson, cut the deficit to four with 7:47 remaining. Nebraska pushed its lead back out to six after a pair of free throws, but that would be the largest lead the Cornhuskers would have the rest of the game.
Sherfield knocked down the first of his two critical 3-pointers at the 6:08 mark, bringing Nevada within one. The Wolf Pack tied the game at 58 just one minute later on two made free throws from Sherfield. K.J. Hymes broke the tie two possessions later on a fast break dunk, putting Nevada ahead 60-58 with 4:33 on the clock. The lead slipped back to the Cornhuskers in the final minute as Nebraska put together a 6-0 run that gave them a 66-64 lead with 54 seconds left. After two free throws by Sherfield and a defensive stop on the other end, Nevada found itself with possession in the final 30 seconds, lining Sherfield up to make the game-winning triple with six seconds on the clock.
Sherfield led all scorers with 19 points and added six rebounds and six assists to his day. Desmond Cambridge also scored in double figures with 18 points, 16 of those coming in the first half. Nevada connected on 48.0 percent of its shots in the game, including above 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
Nevada will open the home portion of its 2020-21 season on Monday, Nov. 30 against Pacific.
