RENO, Nev. -- University of Nevada graduate and former Wolf Pack Swim & Dive team member Mengjiao Mi "JoJo" has been named assistant coach for Nevada's Swim & Dive program, head coach Brendon Bray announced Tuesday.
Mi was a member of the swim & dive team from 2009-13. After graduating in 2013, she served as volunteer assistant with the Wolf Pack. She was promoted to assistant coach in 2016 by Bray and remained in that role until 2019. She also holds coaching experience with China's national team.
As one of the most successful swimmers in Nevada's history, Mi set four individual program records as a senior and became the first swimmer since 2008 to compete in three-consecutive NCAA Championships. She currently holds Pack records in the 500, 1000 and 1,650-yard freestyle events. Her time in the 200-yard freestyle ranks second at Nevada. She is also tied for the eighth-fastest time in school history in the 100-yard freestyle.
Mi received the 2013 Ruth I. Russell Award, which recognizes the top Nevada female student-athlete. She claimed titles in the 200, 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle events at the Mountain West (MW) Championships as a senior. She also won eight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) titles in three seasons when Nevada competed in the WAC. As a freshman, she was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
Outside of Nevada, Mi competed for China's national team in 2003-09. In 2007, Mi won the 200 freestyle at the China National University Games and also won the 400 freestyle in the 2006 Sydney World Youth Championships. Additionally, she was a triple winner in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events at the ASEM Youth Games in Bangkok. She also claimed titles in the 400 and 800 freestyle events at the 2004 World Cup Championships held in Daejeon, Korea.
Mi brings an abundance of knowledge from her time as a student-athlete and assistant coach at Nevada.
"We are so lucky to have coach JoJo back with our program," said Bray. "The obvious accomplishments are easy to read on her resume. She has obtained both her undergraduate and graduate degree from the University, she was one of the top swimmers to ever compete here and holds multiple school records. She was a former volunteer assistant and assistant coach and did an outstanding job in both of those roles, but the absolute best thing about her is her heart and her humility. I love the fact that she is someone for our young women to look up to and will serve as a positive role model."
Mi graduated from the University of Nevada in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in community health science. She went on to earn her master's in public health from Nevada in 2016.
