Nevada drops first Mountain West game 70-68 at SJSU

Harris scores 20 points for the Wolf Pack

SAN JOSE - The University of Nevada (10-6, 3-1 MW) men's basketball teal lost its first Mountain West game of the season falling 70-68 at San Jose State (6-11, 2-3 MW) on Wednesday night at the Provident Credit Union Event Center before 1,459 fans.  The Wolf Pack next plays at Utah State (13-5, 2-3 MW) on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT.  The game will air on CBS Sports Network.

Nevada built an eight-point lead 29-21 with 6:30 to play in the first half but the Spartans closed with a 13-5 run to knot the score at 34.  The Pack once again held an eight-point cushion 53-45 with 11:02 to play in the game before SJSU tied the score at 55 with 7:53 remaining in the second half.  

The Spartans scored the next seven points to move in front 62-55.  Nevada battled back and with 57 seconds to play freshman Zane Meeks tied the game at 66 with his second 3-pointer of the night.  Three consecutive SJSU free throws broke the tie as the Pack now trailed 69-66.  Nevada closed within a point 69-68 with 1.3 seconds to play but SJSU made one more free throw to make the final score 70-68.

Jalen Harris led the Pack with 20 points and Lindsey Drew added 15.  Jazz Johnson scored in double figures for the 14th time this season with his 11 points in the game.  Seneca Knight scored a game-high 28 points for SJSU.

Game Notes:

The Wolf Pack had won the last eight meetings with the Spartans and had not lost at SJSU since Jan. 10, 2008 when both teams competed in the Western Athletic Conference.  SJSU won that game also by two points 62-60. 

Junior Jalen Harris scored a team-high 20 points reaching double figures in the 12 consecutive game.  It was his seventh game of 20 or more points this season which tops the team and includes a 31-point game at Air Force.

Harris has led the Pack in scoring a team-high eight times.

Senior Lindsey Drew scored in double figures for the 11th time this season.  The 11 double figure scoring games is the most he has had in any season at Nevada.  He totaled 10 his junior year.

Senior Jazz Johnson was the third Pack player in double figures with 11 points. Johnson has scored in double figures in 14-of-16 games this season.  The 14 double figure scoring games tops the team.

For the first time this season Nevada was tied at halftime with the score knotted at 34.

First-year head coach Steve Alford is three wins from 600 in his 29th season of coaching college basketball.  Alford is 597-304.   

Nevada led the game for 18:34 and SJSU for 16:03.  The Pack's largest advantage was eight points with 6:30 to play in the first half.  The Spartans largest lead was seven points with 4:21 to play in the game.
