LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Nevada women's basketball team dropped a 83-59 decision at Wyoming on Wednesday night from Arena-Auditorium.
The Cowgirls (8-8, 4-3 MW) came out to a hot start, scoring the game's first six points before a layup by junior
Jacqulynn Nakai got the Wolf Pack (8-9, 1-5 MW) on the board. Wyoming owned the rest of the first quarter, shooting 50 percent on offense and holding Nevada to just one make on 14 tries. The Pack found itself in a 21-6 hole after 10 minutes of action, but Wyoming's hot shooting continued into the second quarter.
By halftime, the Cowgirls were knocking down 56.7 percent of their shots from the field, including 62.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Wyoming defense held the Wolf Pack to a first half season low 17.9 percent shooting in the first half and held it to just 1-of-11 from the 3-point line, while the Cowgirls hit five triples.
The second half was much kinder to the Wolf Pack as the team outscored its opponent by five. The Nevada offense started to find its shot in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 20 and 22 points respectively. Despite outscoring Wyoming in the second half, the first half deficit was too great to overcome.
Senior
Marguerite Effa led the Pack in scoring, totaling 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Freshman
Dom Phillips continued her strong play as of late as she added 12 points. Phillips has scored in double figures in five games this season and in three of her last five games.
Nevada returns to Lawlor Events Center to battle San Diego State this Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. The Wolf Pack will honor the 1976-77 conference championship winning team at halftime and also celebrate alumni weekend.
