Nevada drops Mountain West opener at SDSU 3-1

Rematch with Aztecs tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Reno, Nev. – In a low scoring affair on Friday night, Nevada (7-5, 0-1 MW) lost a close 3-1 battle at San Diego State (6-0, 1-1 MW). The Wolf Pack and Aztecs will face off for the second game of the series tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Junior Ryan Anderson (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after pitching six innings allowing four hits and a season-high three earned runs. SDSU starter Justin Goossen-Brown picked up his second win of the season after throwing five frames.

Anderson recorded five strikeouts on the night, with two coming in the first inning. With the game still tied 0-0, the Pack had a bases loaded opportunity in the second inning but stranded all three runners. The Aztecs responded by plating two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

An Aztec RBI single in the fifth inning made it a 3-0 SDSU lead, but the Pack would quickly respond in the top of the sixth. After Dillan Shrum reached on an error, Kaleb Foster doubled to move him to third. Nevada's leading hitter in Weston Hatten recorded the lone Nevada RBI of the day after grounding out that allowed Shrum to get home.

SDSU almost added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, with two men on and two outs. With a ball hit to center field, Jaylon McLaughlin made a diving catch to keep the deficit and two and finished Anderson's night without allowing any more runs. McLaughlin would make his way to third in the eighth but was left stranded after tying a career-high and leading Nevada with three hits.

The ninth inning saw pinch-hitter Tyler Bosetti get aboard first, but a couple flyouts to left field ended the game for Nevada.

The Pack will seek revenge against the Aztecs tomorrow at 6 p.m. A live stream will be available on the Mountain West Network, with a radio broadcast by Jamie Holloway on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.
