RENO, Nev.  – The University of Nevada women's track and field team broke into the national rankings today, landing at number 119 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Track and Field Rating Index. The Wolf Pack also rose in the regional rankings, and saw the pole vault and 800 meter squads move into the top 50 nationally.
Â
This is the first time the Pack has appeared in the rankings this year, and first appearance since 2016. That year, Nevada was only ranked for week six, when the team came in at 104. The last time the Wolf Pack was ranked in consecutive weeks was in 2013, when the team spent four of the first six weeks in the rankings, reaching a high of 102. The last time Nevada was inside the top 100 was week seven of the 2012 season, when the team was ranked 60th.
Â
The Wolf Pack cracked the top 45 in two event squad rankings as well. In 35th is the pole vault squad, which was led by junior
Gaby Palmer's record breaking 13' 6.25" (4.12 m) finish in the Colorado Invitational. Right behind her was senior
Emily Etter, who reached a height of 12' 5.5" (3.8 m). The duo took first and second at the meet.
Â
At number 44 in the nation is the Wolf Pack's 800m squad, combining for an average time of 2:14.49. The squad is anchored by senior
Lindsey Sickler and sophomore
Eliza McCall, with Sickler owning the seventh-best time at Nevada at 2:13.03 converted. McCall sits just outside the top-10, with a time of 2:13.91 putting her at 11th.
Â
Also in the top 100 are the long jump and shot put squads, which come in at 81st and 90th, respectively. Rankings are compiled by averaging the best results from an event's top four participants, and comparing them against all other schools in the nation.
Â
In the regional rankings, Nevada rose from number 19 to number 11. The eight-place jump was the most of any team in the Mountain Region.
The Pack will be in action again on Friday at the Boise State Team Challenge. The meet will serve as the last competition before the Mountain West Indoor Championships, which run from Feb. 21-22.
