Reno, Nev. – Junior
Ryan Anderson had one of the best pitching performances in Nevada history on Friday night, throwing seven hitless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts in Nevada's (4-1) 1-0 victory at Long Beach State (0-5). Junior catcher
Marco Valenzuela's RBI single in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the contest.
Anderson's (2-0) 11 strikeouts are the third-most by a Wolf Pack pitcher since at least 2000. Nevada took its combined no-hitter into the ninth frame, as
Shane Gustafson pitched the final two innings to record the save, the first of his Wolf Pack career.
The Sparks, Nev. native was dealing from the beginning of the contest, striking out the first two batters he saw. He finished with eight punchouts after five innings, and 11 after seven. He has now totaled 17 strikeouts on the year in 12 innings pitched.
This is Nevada's second shutout of the season, after defeating Texas State 4-0 the second game on the year. The Pack had four combined in 2018.
Nevada had multiple opportunities to take the lead early in the game, as it put runners on the corners in the first and loaded in the bases in the fourth but couldn't bring a runner home in either situation. The Pack finished the contest with 13 men left on base.
Valenzuela proved to be the Pack's most productive offensive player, totaling a team-high two hits and the game-winning RBI. After singles by
Weston Hatten and
Jaylon McLaughlin, and a balk by the Dirtbags, Valenzuela smacked a hit through the left side of the infield to score Hatten from third for the lone run of the contest.
Nevada's chance at its first-ever no-hitter in program history was broken up in the ninth inning, as an infield single by the leadoff batter Calvin Estrada ended the Pack's pursuit of history.
The Wolf Pack will battle the Dirtbags for game two of the series tomorrow night at 6 p.m. A
live stream will be available, as well as Jamie Holloway calling the game on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.
