Nevada takes series from Dirtbags with 5-3 victory Saturday night

Bullpen shines for Pack

Story Links

Reno, Nev. – Freshman Owen Sharts (2-0) picked up his second win on the year, pitching 5.2 innings in Nevada's (5-1) 5-3 victory over Long Beach State (0-6) on Saturday night. The Wolf Pack's bullpen was lights out, as four relievers combined to throw 3.1 hitless innings to close out the game.

All of Nevada's runs were scored in the first two frames, thanks to big swings by senior Kaleb Foster and junior Dillan Shrum. Foster laced a two-RBI triple down the right-field line in the first, and Shrum smacked a two-RBI double in the second. The first run of the game came on a wild pitch that allowed sophomore Joshua Zamora to scamper home from third base after his leadoff single to start the game.

After throwing 98 pitches through 5.2 innings, Sharts was replaced by left-handed pitcher Cooper Powell. Powell went on to toss 1.1 hitless innings while only allowing one walk. Ben Purcell was called upon to eliminate the first batter in the eighth, while Grant Ford cleaned up the inning by striking out the final two batters on seven pitches. It was Ford's first appearance of the season.

Already with a win under his belt, Bradley Bonnenfant recorded his first save of the year by pitching a hitless ninth inning to preserve the 5-3 lead.

After the Pack went up 3-0 in the top of the first thanks to Zamora and Foster, the Dirtbags responded by scoring their first two runs of the series in the bottom of the frame. After Brooks Stolter drew a leadoff walk, a passed ball and wild pitched moved him to third where he was brought home with an RBI single by Laine Huffman. Huffman would later score in the inning before Sharts was able to work the Pack out of it and maintain a 3-2 lead after one.

The final run of the day was scored by Long Beach State in the bottom of the fourth thanks to another wild pitch.

The first three batters in the Pack lineup in Zamora, Wyatt Tilley and Shrum accounted for all five runs scored and four of the six Nevada hits on the afternoon. Zamora led the team with two hits on the night.

Nevada will go for the sweep tomorrow against the Dirtbags, with the final game slated for 1 p.m. A live stream will be available, as well as Ghizal Hasan on the radio call on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.
