Reno, Nev. – Junior
Dillan Shrum and sophomore
Tyler Bosetti played hero for Nevada (3-1) on Tuesday night, defeating UC Davis (3-1) by a score of 5-4. The two infielders each recorded a clutch two-out RBI in the ninth inning after entering the final frame trailing 4-3.
Senior
Bradley Bonnenfant (1-0) picked up his first career win at Nevada after tossing 1.2 hitless innings to close out the game, recording one strikeout. Steve Ouellette (0-1) of the Aggies suffered his first loss on the season.
The game began in favor of the Aggies, as Caleb Van Blake scored an inside-the-park home run to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead. Nevada would be held scoreless until the fourth frame, when freshman
Matt Clayton recorded his first-career RBI, scoring Bosetti to tie the contest. Fellow freshman
Nick Seamons also hit his career-first RBI, knocking in Clayton for the Pack's first lead of the afternoon. Seamons would make his way home on a throwing error by the Aggies to end the inning with a 3-1 lead.
The bottom of the sixth proved to be big for the Aggies, as a home run by Logan Denholm cut the deficit to one, and an RBI double by Cooper Morrison would tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, a sacrifice fly put the Aggies up 4-3 as the Pack took that deficit into the ninth inning.
With two outs and nobody on, third baseman
Joshua Zamora singled to put the game-tying run aboard. Freshman
Julian Boyd would see his first collegiate action as a pinch runner and play an imperative role by scampering to second base on a passed ball. Bosetti recorded his third hit of the game, tying his career-high, resulting in an RBI double that
drove in Boyd for the tie. Shrum would then come up and single through the left side to send Bosetti home and give Nevada the late 5-4 lead.
Bonnenfant would go on to pitch a perfect ninth inning to close out the game and pick up the victory. Nevada is now 3-1 to start the season, its best record to open a year since 2015.
