To celebrate Black History Month, the Nevada women's track and field team is taking a look back at some of the top African-American athletes in the program's history. First up is Atoya Shaw.
Â
Atoya Shaw's name is littered across the Nevada all-time lists. When Shaw graduated, she had three school records and three times in the top five of the Nevada all-time lists.
Â
In 1995, Shaw's 400m hurdles time of 62.56 was the top in school history, and would remain the top time until 2000.
Â
Shaw's personal record time of 8.23 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles is still sitting at fifth all-time at Nevada. When Shaw set it in 1999, the time was good for second in school history.
Â
In the 2000 outdoor season, Shaw helped lead the team to a Big West Conference team championship. Her 13.95 second finish in the 100m hurdles placed her at second on the Nevada all-time list, and won the individual event at the Big West Championships.
Â
That same season, Shaw was a part of two record-breaking relay squads. In the 4x100m relay, the group took home a time of 46.42 seconds. The time was the fastest ever at Nevada, and would stand for 11 years before being broken.
Â
Shaw also took the fourth best time ever at Nevada in the 100m, with a time of 12.09. The time stood at fourth until 2005.
Â
In the 4x400m relay however, Shaw was a part of a time that has not yet been broken. The 3:44.89 finish is still sitting atop the Nevada record books.
Â
Shaw is married for former Nevada and NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson. The couple has three children, Nathaniel II, 14, Nehemiah, 12, and Mia Pearl, 8.
