Swim and Dive Fall Recap

RENO, Nev. – With the fall semester coming to an end, the Nevada swimming and diving team has completed its first half of the season. The Pack posted a perfect 5-0 record in dual meets, while picking up an invitational win at Washington State and a fifth place finish at the Phill Hansel Invite in Houston.

This season, head coach Brendon Bray added eight newcomers to the roster with six true freshmen in Colette BerkenfieldNicolette JaskoValerie KitchensDestiny KlingBenedict Nagy along with a new diver, Jessie Nowotny. Joining the freshmen are two transfers in Ileah Doctor from Indiana and Gianni Pitto from Liberty.

Along with the newcomers were returners; 10 of which were 2019 Mountain West All-Conference team members. Senior Andressa Cholodovskis, juniors Caitlyn McHughDonna dePolo and sophomores  Josien WijkhuijsJulia AdamczykLaura Isabel Vazquez LopezLinnea SorensenWiktoria Samula and Lindsey Soule

In his fourth year at the helm, Bray has had his best start for the Pack with wins over Washington State, UNLV, Boise State, Fresno State and UC Davis in dual formats while beating the defending Mountain West Champions in San Diego State in the Washington State Invite early in the season.

Currently, Nevada ranks first in the Mountain West in not only the 200 free but also the 200 IM with Cholodovskis, along with the 50 back with Wijkhuijs. Leading the conference in relays is the 200 free relay made up of Doctor, Berkenfield, Cholodovskis and Wikjhuijs while the 200 medley with Imogen Watson, dePolo, Wijkhuijs and Doctor also ranks first.

Most recently, the team finished fifth at the Phill Hansel, that also saw a school record fall twice in the span of eight hours. Junior dePolo broke the 100 breast, that was held by Samula, with a time of 1:00.75 but teammate Samula came back from the finals with a time of 1:00.62 to take back the record title. Both however, tallied NCAA 'B' cut times and rank third and fourth in conference.

In just one semester of competition, Nevada has notched three Mountain West Swimmer of the Week accolade and two diver of the week honors. The Pack also comes in ninth, according to College Swimming, in the NCAA Division I Mid-Major point rankings with 747.95 points, good for second in the Mountain West with San Diego State sitting in fifth with 766.25 points.

Nevada will return to action for the 2020 winter/spring season on Jan. 17-18 against Utah and BYU in Utah.
