COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With stellar performances by freshmen
Kendal Stovall and
Kendall Riley, Nevada (4-5-2, 1-2 MW) topped Air Force (1-4-4, 0-2-1 MW) on Friday night 1-0. Stovall pitched her third shutout of the season and Riley drilled her first-career goal to push Nevada past the Falcons.
"We had to grind it out," said Stovall about the team's mentality. "We wanted our first conference win of the season and were tired of losing."
Tonight's victory over the Falcons was Nevada's first Mountain West victory since Oct. 14, 2016 when it topped Colorado College on the road 1-0. It is also the first victory over the Falcons since 2013.
The play of the game came early in the first half, when Air Force was awarded a penalty kick. Stovall made a great play on the ball to save the initial shot, and proceeded to clear the ball with the help of her defense.
The Pack almost capitalized shortly after, when freshman
Payton Lieb was able to tap a rebound back into the goal, but Nevada was called for offside. Lieb still leads Nevada with three goals on the year.
Nevada only recorded two shots on goal in the contest, but in the 42nd minute Riley had an open look and took advantage. She booted a ball just under the crossbar and over the keeper to give Nevada the lead with what ended up the game-winning goal.
In the second half, the Pack hunkered down defensively and Stovall put on a show to preserve the lead. Her best save came in the 86th minute, when she jumped as high as she could to tip the ball over the crossbar and maintain her shutout.
Colorado College will welcome Nevada this Sunday to wrap up its roadtrip. Tickets for the rest of the season's home contests are available at
