LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Nevada volleyball team hit the road for its first conference match on the season. The Pack (7-5, 0-2) fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls (10-4, 2-0) Saturday in three sets.
The sets went 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22. Sophomore Kayla Afoa and junior Dalyn Burns both recorded double-doubles in the match with Afoa leading the offensive strike with 15 kills. Burns tallied 30 assists and 13 digs with Afoa responsible for 10. Senior Mo Maluotoga lead the team on the defense with 18 digs.
This match was the true definition of back-and-forth. There was a total of 25 tied scores and eight lead changes. In the first set, neither team extended its lead over two points which led to 11 ties and only two lead changes.
The Pack took the lead after Afoa blocked Tara Traphagan at the net and maintained the lead through three more points, 14-12. Late in the first set, Jamila Minor got Nevada within one, 23-24 but the Cowgirls took the final kill and the set.
In the second set it started relatively similar to the first with 13 ties and six lead changes, but again neither team led by more than three points. The teams exchanged three-point runs and towards the end, Nevada only trailed by two, 23-21, before Afoa came up big to take away the set point. Wyoming's Emily Lewis took the final kill and the set, 25-23.
Wyoming got out to an 8-2 lead early in the third set, the largest lead either team had all afternoon but the Pack tried to fight its way back in late. The Cowgirls went up 24-17 before Nevada went on a 5-0 scoring run to hold off set point but a kill from Halie Mcardle took the set and the match, 25-22.
Nevada returns to Virginia Street Gym on Thursday as the Pack hosts Boise State, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. PT. Tickets are on sale at NevadaWolfPack.com
