Nevada rallies back to tie Hawai’i 1-1

Ends conference play at Utah on Sunday

RENO, Nev. – After trailing by a goal at halftime, Nevada (3-2-2) rallied back to finish its match against Hawi'i (3-2-1) in a 1-1 tie. Freshman Kathryn Yarbrough headed her first-career goal for the Wolf Pack's lone score of the night.

"I was just running up and Hannah (Souza) dribbled everybody out and I was waiting for a cross," said Yarbrough about her goal in the 66th minute. "I just ran in and did my thing."

The Pack had a couple great scoring chances in the first half, particularly a ball that freshman Olivia Carter got past goalkeeper Alexis Mata. She was ready to send it home, when a last-second effort by the Rainbow Wahine defense drilled the ball out of bounds for a Nevada corner kick.

At the 15 minute mark, Leialoha Medeiros was able to capitalize on a corner kick from Raisa Strom-Okimoto. With the ball still in the air, she was able to put it into the upper left corner where freshman Kendal Stovall could not reach and give Hawai'i an early 1-0 advantage.

Stovall was lights out for the rest of the contest, recording five saves in 110 minutes in goal.

Nevada never lost hope, and in the 66th minute, sophomore Hannah Souza showed off her footwork by dribbling through the Hawai'i defense and feeding Yarbrough a perfect cross. Yarbrough leaped in front of the defense and headed in her first collegiate goal to tie the contest.

After playing 20 extra minutes through double overtime, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

"It's not a win, but we broke our losing streak," said Souza about the result. "I think it's good for our confidence."

Hawai'i finished the night with a 20-14 shot advantage over the Pack, but Nevada registered 10 corner kicks compared to the Rainbow Wahine's three.
