LAS VEGAS – The Nevada softball team opened up its weekend series with a 9-4 loss to UNLV on Friday. Heading into Saturday's second game of the three-game set, the Wolf Pack sits at 19-22 on the season and 8-10 in Mountain West play.
On the day, the Pack's offense was led by senior
Erika Hansen, who launched her 12
th home run of the season with her three-run shot in the fifth. She was joined by sophomore
Kenzi Goins as the only Nevada players to record an RBI in the contest.
Nevada's potent offense was jumpstarted in the top of the third after a double from Goins brought home sophomore
Sadaria McAlister to give the Pack a 1-0 lead. Following nine unanswered runs from the Rebels (25-16, 7-9 MW) over the next two innings, the Pack fought back to cut the deficit in the top of the fifth.
After McAlister led the inning off by reaching base on an error from the Rebels, a walk from senior
Aaliyah Gibson set up a two-on, nobody out situation for Hansen who took one over the centerfield fence to trim the Rebel lead to five. The Pack did its best to fight back but the five-run deficit was too much to overcome as UNLV took the game 9-5.
The second game of the series will take place on Saturday as the Wolf Pack will face the Rebels at 4 p.m.
