Nevada comes up short in 9-6 loss at Nebraska

Krzmarzick’s reach base streak reaches 20 games

LINCOLN, Neb. – Trailing 8-3 the University of Nevada (21-18) baseball team attempted to rally scoring three runs in the top of the eighth but would get no closer falling 9-6 to Nebraska (19-22) at Hawks Field tonight.   With the victory the Cornhuskers have won the series after taking the first game on Thursday 9-5.  The Pack dropped to 21-18 on the season while the Huskers improved to 19-22.  Nevada has lost a season-high five in a row.

The Huskers wasted little time scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump to a 2-0 lead.  The Pack got back-to-back solo home runs leading off the top of the second inning from Mike Echavia and Grant Fennell even the score at two.

As they have in both games, the Huskers responded in the bottom of the second when first baseman Scott Schreiber's 15th home run of the season scored two and Nebraska led 4-2.  Pack third baseman Joshua Zamora's RBI single in fifth inning closed the gap to one run, 4-3.

Once again Nebraska answered back with a three run bottom of the fifth to increase its advantage to four, 7-3.  A single Husker run in the bottom of the seventh pushed the lead to 8-3.

Nevada rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Dillan Shrum had an RBI double and Kaleb Foster an RBI single.  Foster scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.  The Pack would get no closer as Nebraska responded once again with a single run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 9-6.

Jake Jackson (6-3) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, five earned in 4.1 innings on the mound.  Matt Waldron (5-2) earned his fifth win of the season allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings.  Jake Hohensee (8) recorded his eighth save of the season and second in the last two nights pitching 1.1 scoreless innings.

Joshua Zamora (3-for-5,R,RBI) had three hits for the second game in a row, scored a run and drove in one to lead the Wolf Pack.  Daniel Perry (2-for-5,R), Cole Krzmarzick (2-for-5), and Foster (2-for-3,R,RBI) added two hits as the Pack totaled 12 hits in the game.  Five different Nevada hitters drove in a run.  Schreiber (2-for-4,2R,2RBI,HR) had two hits and two RBI on his 15th home run of the season to top the Cornhuskers offense.

The final game of the three-game non-conference series is set for 10 a.m. PT.  Listen to John Ramey call the action on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.  The broadcast is also available online at www.NevadaWolfPack.com/audio.
