RENO, Nev. – After a 4-2 defeat to intrastate rival UNLV (14-9, 3-4 MW) on Thursday afternoon, the Nevada men's tennis team's (15-8, 3-4 MW) season has come to an end in the first round of the Mountain West Championships. The Wolf Pack's 15 victories are the second-most in a season since 1986.
With the schools each earning a victory against one another this season, they will split the three Governor's Series points.
After the Rebels took the doubles point and a 1-0 lead, Nevada took two singles matches and tied the score at 2-2. UNLV would then earn victories on courts No. 6 and then clinch on No. 5 to advance to the second round and face No. 1 seeded Utah State.
The sophomore All-MW doubles tandem of Julien Evrard and Kostya Nesterenko got the afternoon started in the right direction with a dominant 6-1 victory on court No. 1 for the Pack. The Rebels would then earn victories on courts No. 2 and 3 to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
Evrard and Nesterenko earned their 19th doubles victory of the season as a tandem, the second most in a single season in Nevada history.
Senior Robert Margitfalvi played his final match for the Pack and produced a win, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court No. 3 to tie the match at one. The Rebels would then come back with a win of their own on court No. 4, but Nesterenko would finish his big day with a 6-2, 7-6 victory on court No. 2 to tie the match at 2-2.
The Rebels then won matches on courts No. 5 and 6 to win the match 4-2. All-MW singles selection Julien Evrard's match against the MW Player of the Year Alexandr Cozbinov, who is also ranked No. 96 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, went unfinished.
