RENO, Nev. – It came down to the final singles match, but the Nevada men's tennis team (13-6, 2-3 MW) was unable to defeat San Diego State (5-18, 3-3 MW) falling to the Aztecs 4-3. The Wolf Pack will host intrastate rival UNLV on Sunday at 11 a.m. to conclude conference play.
With the match tied 3-3, Pack sophomore Kostya Nesterenko could not complete the comeback on court No. 2, falling 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 to Arnaud Restifo.
Nevada improved its doubles record this season to 38-9 after clinching the point to start the match. Freshman Jeremy Merville and senior Robert Margitfalvi grabbed the first doubles victory with a 6-4 win on court No. 2. Sophomores Julien Evrard and Nesterenko clinched the point on court No. 1, earning a 7-5 victory.
Singles play began in the Wolf Pack's favor, as Evrard continued his dominant conference play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court No. 1. The sophomore now stands at 3-1 this season in MW play.
The Aztec's grabbed wins on courts No. 4 and then 3 to tie the match at 2-2. Augustin Delahodde secured a three-set victory on court No. 5 to give the Pack back the lead, but a victory by SDSU on court No. 6 tied the match again, this time at three.
Restifo's win on court No. 2 sealed the victory for the visiting Aztecs, and dropped Nevada to 2-3 in MW play. The Pack will play the Rebels this Sunday at 11 a.m. to try and end conference play with a .500 MW record.
