2018 Fall Recap: Women's Golf

With a runner-up finish to boast during the 2018 fall season, the Nevada women's golf team looks to build on that momentum heading into its spring campaign.

The Wolf Pack opened its fall season with that runner-up finish at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in September. The runner-up finish marked the Pack's best start to open a season since it also finished second at the NW Inland Cup in 2008. Nevada, which began the day 11 shots behind eventual tournament champ Boise State in the final round, was 5-under after the front nine and owned a one-shot lead at the turn. Red numbers were hard to come by though on the difficult back nine and the Broncos did what they needed to regain the lead and win by two strokes.

Head coach Kathleen Takaishi had her top four scorers all record top 25 finishes in the 75-player field, led by senior Chaithra Katamneni's tie for sixth place. It was Katamneni's second-best finish of her career and best since the spring of 2016. She finished the tournament at even par after posting rounds of 70-73-73. Nevada also got a top 10 finish from freshman Victoria Gailey, who earned a tie for 10th in her collegiate debut.

Nevada closed out the month of September with an 11th place finish at the Coeur d'Alene Collegiate Invitational. The Wolf Pack began the final day right where it finished, but was just one shot back of recording a top 10 finish. The Wolf Pack carded a 12-over team score of 296 for its final round, ending the event with all three rounds under 300. It marked the first time in program history that the Pack had not shot a round above 300 in its first two events.

The Pack posted a second straight 11th place finish at its third event of the fall, the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. The Wolf Pack carded a team round of 299 (+11) in the final round to finish the event at 38-over par and earn 11th place in the 16-team field. Nevada was just one shot shy though of earning a top 10 team finish. Mountain West foe Colorado State took the team title at 4-under par and was the only team in the field to finish under par.

Gailey tied for ninth place in the 90-player field, recording her best finish of the season and her second top 10 in three events. The Oregon native fired a 1-over 73 for her final round to finish the tournament at 2-over par, five strokes behind individual winner Ellen Secor of Colorado State. During the final round, Gailey played a perfect back nine with birdies on No. 11 and 17 and no bogeys.

From there the Wolf Pack closed out its fall season with a ninth place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Nevada turned in its best team score of the tournament in the final round with a 2-over round of 290. It marked the Pack's lowest team score of the season. Nevada finished the event at 10-over par overall to earn a top 10 finish.

Katamneni jumped 19 spots on the individual leaderboard thanks to a 3-under 69 in the final round, the best round by a Pack player that week. Katamneni played a near perfect round of golf, with just one bogey on her scorecard and four birdies to go along with 13 pars. The round of 69 was a season-low for Katamneni and helped her finish in a tie for 21st place at even par for the tournament. Gailey also tied with her teammate in 21st place, finishing at even par overall. Gailey produced back-to-back rounds of 71 before shooting a 74 in the final round to bring her score to even par.

Gailey finished the fall season with a scoring average of 72.75, which is on pace to set the single season program record. As a team, the Pack compiled a scoring average of 295.25 in the fall, which is also on pace to set the single season program record.

Nevada will start a six-tournament spring schedule at the Battle at the Rock, Feb. 11-12 at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside, Calif.
