SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Nevada volleyball team battled through the four set match but ultimately fell to San Jose State, 3-1. The Wolf Pack moves to 8-10, 1-6 in conference while the Spartans go to 7-9, 2-5 in Mountain West play.
Nevada was led offensively by none other than the sophomore Kayla Afoa and redshirt freshman Hailey Maniglia, who has become a consistent force at the net. The middle blocker also notched six blocks on the night to go with her nine kills. Afoa was the lone Pack member who tallied double digit kills with 12.
The sophomore Sam Hayward returned to the starting rotation after suffering an injury that kept her out the past few weeks. The outside hitter recorded five kills and 21 total attacks in her first match back.
Dalyn Burns also returned to the starting rotation and in double-double fashion. The junior had 16 assists with 10 digs. Jamila Minor lead the team in digs with a whopping 21 while also having two service aces.
In the first set, the Pack won the first point off a kill from Afoa but a Spartan challenge overturned the point and put San Jose up 1-0. Following the overturned call, SJSU went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead. Nevada answered right back with a 6-0 run for themselves and tied it up 12-12. The teams exchanged points and held it within two points up until the Spartans took three of the final five kills and the set, 25-22.
The second set saw the Pack trail the Spartans by four at the media timeout mark, 15-11 and continue to dominate up front with three kills to take the 21-13 lead. San Jose continued to attack and ultimately won the set, 25-17.
Nevada called timeout down by three in the third set, 11-8, and turned around and tied it up, 15-15, after a kill form Minor, two attack error from the Spartans and a Minor ace. The momentum shifted and Nevada finished the set on a 7-0 scoring run to win, 25-21.
A similar thing happened in the fourth set where the Pack trailed in the middle and called timeout down by four and scored six of the next seven to bring it within one, 19-18. Nevada continued to battle but fell just shy, 25-21.
Next for the Pack is a Saturday afternoon match at Air Force before returning to home play on Oct. 18, taking on Fresno State at 6:30 p.m. PT.
