RENO, Nev. – Freshman
Payton Lieb netted her team-high fourth goal of the season to try and spark Nevada's second-half comeback, but the Wolf Pack (4-9-2, 1-6 MW) fell short to San Diego State (5-8-2, 3-2-2 MW) on Friday night 2-1. Freshman goalkeeper
Kendal Stovall tied a career-high with nine saves on the night.
With the loss, the Pack falls to 0-8 all-time against SDSU.
The first half started in favor of the Aztecs, with a goal coming in the third minute by Laura Fuentes. Just before the twenty-minute mark hit, Mia Root picked up her second assist on the night after feeding a cross to Darcy Weiser who scored to put San Diego State up 2-0. Weiser's goal proved to be the game winner.
After registering only four shots in the first half, Nevada put up seven in the final 45 minutes including Lieb's goal in the 47th minute. Senior
Angel Meriwether created space along the right sideline and drilled a shot on goalkeeper Gabby English. When English could not handle the blast from Meriwether, Lieb was there to tap in the rebound to cut the score to 2-1.
Stovall was perfect in the second half, recording five saves to keep Nevada within striking distance. Meriwether and freshman
Kylie Minamishin had some good looks on goal as the clock wound down, but were unable to tie the match.
What looked like a goal with three minutes remaining by sophomore
Carrington Tolliver was called back for Nevada being offsides, as she snuck her shot past English during a
battle in the box among both teams, and the match ended with an SDSU victory.
Nevada will finish its homestand this Sunday, with a match against New Mexico at 1 p.m. Tickets for the contest and the rest of the season's home matches are available at
