RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada soccer team (1-2-0) was defeated by the Portland State Vikings (1-1-0) by a score of 1-0 in double overtime on Friday afternoon. The team will travel to play Grand Canyon next Friday at 4 p.m.
After only recording one shot in the first half, Nevada's offense caught fire in the second getting 10 shots off and eight on goal in total on the day. The Wolf Pack also had six corner kicks in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Lauryn Horstdaniel made six saves with the Vikings getting 18 shots off in the 103 minutes played. The game-winning goal came from Katie Forsee of the Vikings as she drilled the ball into the upper right corner of the goal from fifteen yards out.
In the 72nd minute, Portland State's Regan Russell was issued a red card and was forced to leave the contest, which left the Vikings with only 10 players on the pitch for the rest of the match. Shortly after, Angel Meriwether was tripped in the box and had an opportunity at a penalty kick, but Portland State goalkeeper Abbie Faingold saved the attempt to keep the game tied at 0-0. Faingold ended the day with eight saves.
The Wolf Pack was able to shutout the Vikings for over 100 minutes, due in large part to the defense in front of the net. Bryanna Wiehe was able to shut down opposing attacks and clear the ball away from Nevada's goal multiple times throughout the contest.
Meriwether and Rachel Gensch had two shots on goal each, while Hannah Miller had three shots with one going on goal in her first action of the season. Wiehe, Horstdaniel, Katie Prosser and Morgan Beye all played the entire 103 minutes.
Nevada will travel to Arizona next weekend to face Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona. The Wolf Pack's first home game in Mackay Stadium will be Sept. 8 against Southern Utah. Get your tickets for the rest of the season's home games today by calling (775) 348-PACK or visiting NevadaWolfPack.com.
