RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada (1-1-0) defeated Sacramento State (1-1-0) in double overtime after being down two goals in the first half on Sunday afternoon. Erin Otagaki earned her first win as the head coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack.
"Great game against a great Sacramento State team," said head coach Erin Otagaki, "Our players battled from start to finish and I am so proud of their effort and resolve to win. Happy for the team on their comeback victory."
Goalkeeper Lauryn Horstdaniel set a new career high with 10 saves in the contest. One of the most pivotal came in the final seconds of the second half, where she was able to smack the ball into the crossbar and save a goal that would have given the Hornets the win.
Nine minutes into the game, Kylee Kim-Bustillos would score her first of two goals for the Hornets by lobbing the ball into the upper left corner to give Sacramento State a 1-0 lead. She would then proceed to score again at the 25 minute mark off of an assist from teammate Amanda Mielke.
Right before the first half ended, Analyse Talavera scored the first goal of the season for Nevada. Junior transfer Eleanor Small was able to dance her way through multiple defenders in front of the net and feed Talavera to get the assist.
The Wolf Pack would tie the game when Rylee Peterson got the ball to Mackenzie Robinson, who proceeded to fire a laser over goalkeeper Kaylyn Evans and into the net. It was Peterson's first of two assists on the day.
After not being able to decide a victor in the first 90 minutes or in the first 10 minute overtime period, freshman Rachel Gensch not only scored her first collegiate goal, but won the game for Nevada after skipping the ball into the left corner past the outstretched hands of Evans.
Sacramento State had 14 fouls compared to Nevada's 13, and four corner kicks to the Wolf Pack's three. Nevada had nine shots on goal in the contest.
