LAWRENCE, Kan. - In what turned out to be a battle between two pitchers through the first four innings, the Nevada softball team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday night by a score of 6-3. Heading into Sunday's rubber match, the Wolf Pack sits at 23-18 in its 2017 campaign and 3-1 against Power-5 opponents on the season.
For the second night in a row, the Jayhawks (23-23) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as they took a 1-0 advantage at the end of the opening frame. Sophomore Kali Sargent bounced back, keeping KU off the scoreboard over the next three innings.
With Kansas holding a one-run in the fourth, the Pack managed to plate a run in the inning to tie the score a one a piece. After junior Aaliyah Gibson recorded her seventh triple of the season, sophomore Alyssa Mendez brought her around to score with a single to centerfield.
The Jayhawks responded in the fifth, plating five runs to take a five-run lead into the final two innings. Nevada didn't go away quietly though as the Pack would load the bases in the seventh to score two more runs.
With two outs in the inning, Gibson reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed both freshman Mele Tausinga and junior Erika Hansen to score on the play. However, the five-run deficit proved to be too much for Nevada to overcome as Kansas took home the 6-3 victory.
The conclusion of the three-game series will take place on Sunday. First pitch of the series finale is slated for 10 a.m. PT, where Nevada will seek its fourth consecutive series win.
