Day One Results
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Following the first 18 holes of the Mountain West Championship, the Nevada women's golf team is in sixth place with 36 holes remaining.
There are only three teams of the nine competing squads that are under par. San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico are all tied for the lead at 1-under par. The Wolf Pack is 17 shots behind the leaders after an opening-round 304 (+16) on Monday. Nevada struggled to find red numbers out on the course as the team made just eight birdies throughout the day. The Pack is ahead of Boise State, Wyoming and Colorado State.
On an individual side Nevada has a pair of rookies who sit inside the top 20 after day one. Mari Nishiura and Katy Rutherford both carded 2-over rounds of 74 on Monday and are tied for 17th place going into the second round. Nishiura was poised for an even par round but got into trouble on No. 16 where a double bogey caused her to drop two strokes. Rutherford began her day 3-over through the first nine but turned things around and played the back side at 1-under.
Sophomore Kaitlin Collom, a winner in her last event, is one shot behind Nishiura and Rutherford after she opened her championship run with a 75. She birdied her first hole of the day and two others on the back nine but closed her round with a double bogey on No. 18. Juniors Jordan Keyser and Celyn Khoo will look to rebound on Tuesday after they each carded rounds in the 80s and sit in ties for 40th and 44th, respectively.
Manon Molle of New Mexico is the 18-hole leader at 4-under par. Molle leads Harley Dubsky of UNLV by one shot. There were just six players in the 45-player field to shoot a score under par during the opening round.
