BOISE, Idaho - The Nevada women's basketball team outscored Boise State in the second half but the comeback effort fell short by the final of 77-74 Wednesday night from Taco Bell Arena.
The Wolf Pack (10-16, 4-11 MW) outscored the Broncos (19-7, 9-6 MW) 42-38 in the second half of play but the seven-point deficit at halftime proved to be the difference maker. In the third quarter alone Nevada produced 28 points, which was tied for its second-most in a quarter this season.
In the fourth quarter though, the Broncos used a push in the later goings of the period to regain the lead. Boise State outscored Nevada, 20-14, in the final 10 minutes. With just over a minute remaining on the clock, junior Teige Zeller hit a five-foot jumper that cut the Pack's deficit back down to just one, 75-74. A Boise State turnover with 36 seconds left then gave the ball back to Nevada. After a timeout called by the Wolf Pack and 17 seconds on the clock, it was Nevada which then turned the ball over.
As possession went back to the Broncos, the Pack was forced to start fouling. With 5.6 seconds displayed on the clock, BSU's Shalen Shaw went to the line for a pair of free throws with her team up by one. Shaw missed both foul shots. Nevada called its final timeout to advance the ball up the court and have a chance at the game-winning shot. The ensuing inbound pass was tipped off the fingers of a Nevada player and went out of bounds, giving the ball back to Boise State once again. With a few seconds still on the clock, Nevada fouled once again but the Broncos hit both free throws this time, giving them a 77-74 lead. As time expired, junior T Moe heaved a half court shot for the tie but it went just wide, sealing the win for Boise State.
Freshman Desirae Gonzalez notched the first double digit game of her career as she produced 12 points in the game on 5-of-8 shooting. Senior Stephanie Schmid led all Nevada scorers with 19 points but did not score in the fourth quarter. Nevada had a rebound game at the free throw line, connecting on 82.6 percent (19-of-23). The Pack had 16 turnovers in the first half, but cut that down to just six in the second half.
Nevada returns home to Lawlor Events Center for a Governor's Series matchup against UNLV this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
