LAS VEGAS - After having two of its games canceled due to weather, the Nevada softball team came out on top of Southern Utah by a score of 6-1 on Sunday in the final day of the De Marini Classic. The victory over the Thunderbirds (1-7) improved the Pack's record to 5-3 on the season, winning two of its three contests this weekend.
Nevada's offense had no problem putting runs up on the board in hurry as the team crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the first inning. It began with three of the Pack's first five batters reaching base, which allowed freshman Sierra Mello to slide her way across home plate after a passed ball from the Thunderbirds.
With runners now on second and third, junior Erika Hansen ripped line-drive single to the right fielder, scoring junior Aaliyah Gibson and sophomore Alyssa Mendez to extend the Pack's early 3-0 lead. The Wolf Pack's bats continued to make noise in the second, adding two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore Ali Tedford made her presence felt early, stealing second base after she came in to pinch run for Amanda Nicholas, who collected the Pack's first hit of the inning off a single to the third baseman. Tedford would later come around and score off of a fielder's choice from a ball hit by Gibson.
After an error by the third baseman from a hard hit ball by freshman Mele Tausinga, Mello ended up crossing the plate for the second time of the game, scoring the Pack's final run of the second inning. The 5-0 lead Nevada had at this point proved to be all that senior McKenna Isenberg would need, as she went the distance for the third time this season, improving her record to 3-1 on the year.
She finished the afternoon tossing a four-hitter, giving up two walks and striking out five batters in the process. Gibson and freshman Kenzi Goins led the Pack in hits, each going 2-for-3 in the game.
Up next, Nevada will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. to compete in the GCU Classic Feb. 24-26.
