RENO, Nev. – On an afternoon that saw the reigning Mountain West champions come to Lombardi Pool, the Nevada swimming and diving team fell to the Boise State Broncos by a score of 163-137 on Friday. The meet marked the Wolf Pack's first dual of the 2017-18 season, where Nevada now sits at 0-1 in dual meets on the year.
In total, Nevada won six out of 16 events, three of which came courtesy of sophomore
Andressa Cholodovskis. Senior
Sharae Zheng won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, while freshman
Donna dePolo rounded out the victories for Nevada with her win in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Cholodovksis won Nevada's first event of the day with a win the 200-yard freestyle that she swam in 1:49.65, a season-best time. After senior
Jaeger Turner narrowly placed second in the 100-yard backstroke by one-tenth of a second, dePolo kept the Pack within reach of the Broncos by coming out on top of the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.75, a season-best as well.
With Nevada trailing Boise State by 31 points after seven events, the Pack made its case to stay within striking distance of the Broncos with its performances on the 3-meter springboard. While Zheng placed first with a score of 409.28, junior
Sio I Lei finished in second, scoring 311.85 points.
The first diving event was then immediately followed by Nevada finishing first and second again, with Cholodovskis (51.48) and junior
Rebecca Murray (51.86) claiming the top two spots, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle. Nevada mounted itself for another late comeback in events 14 and 15, after all three divers finished in the top three spots and Cholodovskis won her third event of the day in the 200-yard IM, but the Pack's deficit was too much to overcome as the team fell short of toppling Boise State.
Nevada will be back in the pool for its second dual meet of the season, when it hosts Fresno State Saturday, Oct. 28 at noon PT. With this being the last home meet of the year, the Wolf Pack's seniors will be honored prior to the start of the dual.
