SAN JOSE, Calif. - Opening Mountain West play Thursday night, the Nevada women's basketball team dropped a 107-84 decision at San Jose State.
The Spartans (4-9, 1-0 MW) used a 31-point third quarter, which included nine three-pointers, to create a lead too great for the Wolf Pack (6-6, 0-1 MW) to overcome. SJSU began the third quarter on a 19-3 run and did not relinquish its lead. The Spartans hit 14 shots from beyond the arc in the game at a 46.7 percent clip. Nevada hit 11 itself but shot just 34.2 percent for the game.
The 107 points put up by the Spartans is a season high. Nevada's 84 points is its third highest of the season and its 11 three-pointers are a new season high. Junior Halie Bergman, who entered halftime with three personal fouls, produced the first 20-point game of her career as she finished with a team-high 21. Bergman hit five shots from long range, which also set a new career high.
Senior Stephanie Schmid also reached double figures, pouring in 16 points for the Wolf Pack. Sophomore Terae Briggs grabbed 14 rebounds, which tied her career-high, and nine offensive boards. Briggs fell two points shy of her third double-double of the year. Fellow sophomore AJ Cephas, who was looking for her third straight double-double, posted eight points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Nevada freshman Desirae Gonzalez, who began the year on the sidelines recovering from injury, made her collegiate debut in the first quarter. Gonzalez hit two three-point shots to finish with six points and added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Nevada had a solid night from the free throw line, connecting on 21-of-28 from the charity stripe. Junior T Moe, who ranks inside the top 15 in the nation in free throw shooting percentage, was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.
San Jose State was led by its senior guard Dezz Ramos, who scored a game-high 40 points. Ramos' 40-point night set a new career high and is the second-most points in a single game by a San Jose State player.
Nevada has a quick turnaround as it prepares to host Fresno State this Saturday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. from Lawlor Events Center.
