MALIBU, Calif. - Nevada women's basketball defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 69-60, on Sunday afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season, which is the best start for the Pack since the 2012-13 campaign. With the help of senior guard Stephanie Schmid knocking down five three pointers, the Wolf Pack hit seven shots from beyond the arc on just 13 attempts.

The Pack came out of the gates showing its defensive prominence, as the team forced a pair of turnovers on the Waves' first two possessions. A post-move score from junior forward Teige Zeller gave Nevada its first points of the game, sparking a 10-2 run from the Pack. After back-to-back threes from the Pack and another basket from Zeller, Pepperdine was forced to call its first timeout of the game at the 5:29 mark.

Nevada maintained its defensive pressure throughout the rest of quarter, as the Pack held the Waves to just 22 percent shooting in the opening frame. After the first quarter, Nevada had a 16-8 advantage after forcing Pepperdine to six turnovers.

The Waves used a 12-4 run to tie the game at 20 a piece in the second period, but the Pack bounced back after the media timeout to reclaim the lead. Schmid scored six consecutive points for Nevada, which was followed by back-to-back baskets from sophomore forward AJ Cephas. The 10-4 run the Pack used to close out the quarter gave Nevada a 30-24 lead heading into the locker room.

Both teams traded baskets at the start of the second half, as a total of 29 points were scored at the media timeout. The two squads ended the third quarter shooting over 45 percent, but not before Cephas recorded her sixth basket of the game. She finished the afternoon tying her season-high with 12 points.

The fourth quarter began with a scoreless drought, as neither team had scored any points through the first two minutes. However, sophomore guard Riana Everidge would connect on her second three pointer of the game to extend Nevada's lead to eight points. After Pepperdine climbed back to cut Nevada's lead to just three with under five minutes to play, Schmid knocked down a three pointer of her own, finishing the game with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-5 shooting from distance.

Zeller collected the third double-double of her career when she scored her fifth basket of the afternoon, giving her 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Pack's defense limited the Waves to just two field goals on eight attempts in the final minutes, helping Nevada close out the game with a pair of free throws from junior guard T Moe, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Up next, Nevada will host the Nugget Classic inside of Lawlor Events Center. The Pack will open up the holiday tournament on Nov. 25, when it takes on Navy at 2 p.m. PT.
