Ron Moore Final Results
DENVER, Colo. - It was a good final day for the Nevada women's golf team at the Ron Moore Women's Collegiate as the Wolf Pack carded a team round of 5-under par and tied for ninth place.
"We played really well today. I'm proud of the team and how they continued to battle and figure out the golf course," said head coach Kathleen Takaishi. "Our scores got better each day which is a good sign. We made a ton of birdies and limited our bad holes to just bogeys."
The Pack's Sunday team score of 283 is the second-lowest team score for 18 holes in program history. Nevada finished with a three-day total score of 885, which ranks in a tie for fourth for a 54-hole total. Sunday's round also ranked as the third-lowest team round of the tournament.
The Wolf Pack, which found itself in 15th place after round one, finished the event in a tie for ninth thanks to Sunday's catapult up the leaderboard. Nevada tied with Fresno State at 21-over for the tournament. Pepperdine led after each round and won the team title by four shots over runner-up and tournament host Denver. The Waves and Pioneers were the only teams in the 18-team field to finish under par.
Sophomore Chaithra Katamneni played a stellar round of golf on Sunday, shooting a career-low, 4-under 68. Her round is tied for the third-lowest individual round in program history. She began the day just inside the top 40 and rocketed up to a tie for 19th place in the 102-player field. Katamneni played the back-9 flawlessly with two birdies and no bogeys. She had just one blemish, a bogey on No. 8, on her scorecard today and added five birdies overall.
"Chaithra played great today and this should give her a lot of confidence going into our final fall event," said Takaishi.
The team as a whole played the back side of the course extremely well. The Wolf Pack totaled 10 birdies to just five bogeys. Behind Katamneni, freshman Mari Nishiura also shot under par for her final round, carding a 2-under 70 and establishing a new career-low. Nishiura, along with two of her teammates, improved her play from round to round and she tied for 34th place.
Junior Jordan Keyser and freshman Katy Rutherford each wound up in a tie for 44th at 8-over for the tournament. Keyser fired her best round of the weekend with a 1-over 73 and posted a 3-under score on the back-9. Rutherford went one stroke lower, shooting an even par round of 72, which is a career-low. She also made three birdie putts on the back side. Rounding out the list of Pack players is senior Bertille DuPont who tied for 65th at 13-over par.
Sophie Newlove of Denver captured the individual crown at 6-under par overall. She bested Hira Naveed of Pepperdine of two strokes. The Waves placed three individuals inside the top five.
Nevada will conclude its fall season at the end of the month with a trip to Southern Nevada to compete in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Oct. 23-25.
