RENO, Nev. - The Nevada women's golf team remains in the state of Nevada but heads south for their final fall tournament, the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, hosted by UNLV.
"The team had a week and a half to get some quality practice in and they look sharp and are ready to compete," said coach Kathleen Takaishi. "This event will feature the strongest field we will probably see all year. It will be a good test to see where we stand against the top teams in our conference and in the nation. The key for us is to figure out the golf course in the practice round, have a game plan and stick to it."
This is a familiar tournament for the Wolf Pack with its fourth consecutive trip to this event. Last season Nevada set multiple team records during its run, including lowest 18-hole, lowest 36-hole and lowest 54-hole team scores. The Pack is looking to build off of those scores from last season and three straight top 10 finishes from its current fall season.
The field features 19 teams, four of which are ranked in the top 40 in the nation. Nevada enters the weekend ranked 83rd in the GolfStat rankings, which is one of its highest rankings in recent years. This event will give Nevada a good chance to see where it stacks up in the Mountain West through the fall season as it will compete against six league schools.
Takaishi will stick with the same starting five who shot the second-lowest 18-hole team score in program history the last time out. Freshman Katy Rutherford will get a chance to play at No. 1 this week after a solid qualifying effort. Filling in behind her will be sophomore Chaithra Katamneni who carded a career-low 68 for her last round of competition. Junior Jordan Keyser, freshman Mari Nishiura and senior Bertille DuPont round out the rest of the lineup this week.
Live scoring for the entire tournament will be available on BirdieFire.com.
