PORTLAND, Ore. - The Nevada volleyball team knocked-off UC Riverside in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 25-12, 24-26, 15-11), to wrap up action at the Portland Classic on Saturday evening. In its first match of the day, the Wolf Pack were topped by Portland State, 3-1.

Sophomore Madison Foley broke her career-high in kills twice over the weekend, yesterday with 21 against Portland and today with 23 in the win over the Highlanders. Junior Madison Morell totaled 18.0 points on 13 kills and senior Sam Willoughby pieced together a complete performance with nine kills, four blocks and two aces for the Wolf Pack (2-4, 0-0 MW).

In the first set against UC Riverside, with the score tied at 22-22, Willoughby picked up a kill which was followed by an error that gave Nevada set point, 24-22. The Highlanders tied the score again, 24-24, but back-to-back kills from Foley Morell propelled the Pack to the first set win, 26-24.

UC Riverside claimed the second set, 25-21, but Nevada responded in a big way in set No. 3. A kill from the Highlanders made it 9-9 but the Pack finished the set on a 16-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Foley went 7-for-9 in the frame while sophomore Mo Maluotoga contributed two digs in her second appearance for the Pack over the weekend.

A kill from Willoughby kicked off the first set but Nevada would not have the lead again until Morell registered a kill that gave the Pack a 23-22 advantage. An error from UC Riverside gave Nevada set point but the Highlanders persevered and took the next four points to win the set, 26-24.

The Pack trailed 5-3 in the fifth set but a kill from junior Kathryn Groenweghe and an ace from Foley tied the set at 5-5. With the score now at 9-9, senior Sommer King came in as a substitution and picked up a kill that put Nevada up for good as the Pack claimed the deciding set, 15-11

In its first match of the day, Nevada was on top for most of the first set against the Vikings and led by as much as three, 16-13, after consecutive kills from King, Groenweghe and Morell. Portland State though would inch its way back and go up 17-16 for its first lead of the match. A kill from Rothfuss tied up the score at 21-21 but it would be the final point of the set for the Pack as Vikings went on to claim the set, 25-21.

After Nevada dropped the second set, 25-14, an ace from sophomore Madison Foley and a kill from Morell setup a PSU error that tied the score at 18-18 in set number three. Despite five kills from Morell in the frame, Portland State proved to be too much as they clinched the match after claiming the third set, 25-19.
