SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Despite a day that saw junior
Madison Morell post a team-high 26 kills and five service aces, the Nevada volleyball team dropped a doubleheader on the final day of the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday. The Wolf Pack lost to Santa Clara, 3-0, before falling to Kent State, 3-1.
Senior
Sam Willoughby registered a team-high .265 hitting percentage over the two matches for the Pack (5-7, 0-0 MW), who out-served its opponents 19-15 on the day. Senior
Sommer King was named to the All-Tournament team after tallying 21.5 points in the three matches.
With the score tied at 14-14 in the first set against Kent State, a kill from Willougby, an ace from Morell and a kill from Foley created separation and gave Nevada a 17-14 lead. The Pack would not trail again in the set as Nevada won the first, 25-22, to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Nevada held set point in the third set, 24-22, but the Pack would lose the lead before a kill from Morell gave the Pack another lead, 25-24. The Golden Flashes would prove to be too much as it claimed the third, 27-25, and the fourth, 25-21, to win the match.
After Santa Clara claimed the first to take a 1-0 lead in the match, the Pack trailed but got to within four, 13-9, after a kill and an ace from senior
Sam Willoughby. It wasn't enough though as the Broncos took the second and third sets to sweep the Pack, 3-0, despite a six kill performance in the third set from Morell.
The Pack will open conference play on the road against Air Force on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m.
