BERKELEY, Calif. - The first victory of 2015 for the Nevada volleyball team and the first win in the head coaching career of Lee Nelson came in convincing fashion as the Wolf Pack topped Eastern Washington, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21), on the final day of the Molten Classic on Saturday evening. The Pack fell to Seattle, 3-0, in its first match on Saturday to go 1-2 in its first tournament of the season.
Senior
Sommer King finished with a team-best .400 hitting percentage (9-for-15) while sophomore
Madison Foley registered a match-high 12 kills for the Pack (1-2, 0-0 MW). Classmates
Taylar Rothfuss and
Sam Willoughby connected often in the win as Rothfuss finished with 37 assists and Willoughby hit at a .333 clip.
A service ace from junior
Madison Thorpe followed by an Eagle error in the first set gave Nevada its largest lead, 14-6, and the Pack did not give up the lead for the remainder of the frame. Nevada finished the first set on a 3-0 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second, the Pack surrendered the first point but would be the only time they would trail as junior
Kathryn Groenweghe posted five blocks and three kills to lead Nevada to a 25-19 second set victory.
The Pack hit at an impressive .317 clip in the third set and used a 5-1 run that included kills from Foley and King to clinch the match.
In the Pack's first match of the day against Seattle, Nevada held the Red Hawks to a .143 hitting percentage but fell 25-17. After dropping the second set, 25-14, Nevada looked to prevent a sweep in the third frame.
After going back and-fourth through most of the set, a 4-1 run, which included three kills and an ace from Foley, gave Nevada a 22-21 lead. Trailing 24-23 after another service ace from Foley, consecutive kills from Morell gave the Pack its first set point of the third, 25-24. The Pack lost its lead but regained it after Morell was set up by senior
Taylar Rothfuss on the kill to go back up, 26-25. There would be three more ties and three lead changes after that as Seattle hung on to top Nevada, 30-28, to take the match.
The Pack will be back in action next week for the Portland Tournament where it will face Portland at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, Portland State at 11 a.m. and UC Riverside at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
