Mountain West Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West released its women's basketball preseason poll and all-conference awards with Nevada junior guard Stephanie Schmid tabbed as the Preseason Co-Newcomer of the Year.
Schmid and Dezz Ramos, San Jose State's junior transfer from Weber State, earned the distinction. Marquelle Dent of Wyoming was picked as the Preseason Player of the Year, while Jannon Otto of New Mexico earned Preseason Freshman of the Year honors.
Schmid, who hails from Lake Zurich, Ill. and enters her first season with the Wolf Pack, totaled 1,056 points during her two years at Arizona Western, sinking more than 200 shots from three-point range. She was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Player of the Year for the 2014-15 campaign. Adding to her accolades from this past season, the 5-10 guard earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) second team All-American honors and was a first team All-ACCAC and All-Region selection.
During her sophomore year, Schmid led the conference in scoring, averaging 20.8 points per game, and three-point percentage, knocking down 40.9 percent of her shots from downtown. She was the only NJCAA Division I player to average more than four made three's per game. Aside from her shooting abilities from long range, Schmid also ranked third in the nation in free throw percentage (90.4 percent).
Along with the preseason awards, the conference also announced its preseason poll with the Pack predicted to finish 10th in the 11-team league. Colorado State garnered 12 first place votes and are picked to capture the regular season title once again. New Mexico received seven first place votes to rank second in the poll and Boise State received six first place votes to rank third.
Nevada will get a good look at everything in game action with an exhibition contest on Nov. 7 at Lawlor Events Center against Chico State. The regular season begins the following Friday, Nov. 13 as the Pack takes on San Diego at 6:30 p.m.
