ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Madison Morell registered her second double-double of the season and freshman Madison Foley recorded a game-high 13 kills but the Nevada volleyball team could not capitalize on its second set victory as New Mexico topped the Pack, 3-1, on Thursday evening.
Senior Tessa Lea'ea put up big numbers with 13 kills and seven blocks while junior Sam Willoughby posted a .312 hitting percentage and two service aces for the Pack (5-13, 2-6 MW).
After dropping the first set, 25-14, Lea'ea kicked off the second frame with a kill to give Nevada its first lead of the match. The Pack would lead by as much as three, 18-15, late in the set before New Mexico came back to take a 21-19 advantage. Nevada responded with a kill from Willoughby that sparked a 6-0 tear, capped off by a solo block from Lea'ea that sealed the Pack's a 25-21 second set victory.
With match score now tied at 1-1, Nevada came out of the break to take a 15-12 lead in the third set after a kill from Willoughby forced a Lobo timeout. New Mexico would regain the lead but consecutive kills from Morell gave the Pack a two-point cushion, 22-20. The Lobos tied the score again at 22-22 and again Nevada would go up one, 23-22, this time on a kill from sophomore Lyndsey Anderson. Despite the back-and-fourth affair, Nevada could not hold on as a 5-1 run gave the Lobos the set as they went up 2-1 in the match.
New Mexico would go on to out-hit the Pack in deciding frame, .250 to .050, to win the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
Nevada will continue its two-match road swing on Saturday in Colorado Springs where the Pack will take on Air Force at 1 p.m.
