RENO, NEV. – Led by senior Ryan Hallisey, the University of Nevada men’s golf team is in second place at the 2010 Barona Collegiate Cup. The 17-team tournament is hosted by San Diego State and held in Lakeside Calif. at the Barona Creek Golf Club March 25-26.
At the Barona Collegiate Cup, six golfers play per team and the low five scorers count toward team score each round. The Wolf Pack carded seven-under 353 in round one to finish first yet fell to second after round two by carding 17-over 377. San Diego State leads after carding 357 and 355 to finish at eight-under 712. Nevada, in second, is at 10-over 730 (353-377); a three-stroke advantage over UC-Irvine in third at 13-over 733. Northwestern is fourth carding 15-over 735 (362-373) and Oregon is fifth at 17-over 737 (368-369).
Nevada’s Hallisey is in a three-way tie for third as he carded one-under 71 in Thursday’s first round and three-under 69 in the second for a total of four-under 140. Senior Taylor Coffman carded three-under 69 in round one to end in a seven-way tie for eighth at even-par 144 (69-75). Junior Chris Plappert made his spring season debut by carding even par in round one to tie for 15th at one-over 145 (72-73). Senior Jared Becher carded two-under 70 followed by seven-over 79 to end in a tie for 35th at five-over 149. Junior Scott Smith carded two-under 70 in the first round yet struggled in round two and is tied for 59th at nine-over 153 (70-82). Senior Travis Esway (75-81) rounds out the Wolf Pack tied for 72nd, respectively.
John Chin of UC-Irvine leads individually after carding seven-under 65 in round one and one-under 71 in round two to end at eight-under 136. Chin has a one-stroke advantage over Johan Carlsson (San Diego State) in second at seven-under 137 (68-69).
Teams will play the final round Friday beginning with a shot-gun start of 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time.
