Stephen Cavallo joined the Nevada soccer coaching staff ahead of the 2023 season.
Cavallo spent the previous six seasons as the head coach of the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team.
"I am thrilled to add Stephen to the Nevada soccer coaching staff," head coach Vanessa Valentine said. "His soccer knowledge and experience as a head coach will serve as a great asset to the culture we are looking to build at Nevada. I am confident that Stephen will make an immediate impact on our coaching staff."
Under Cavallo's guidance in 2021, MSUB held a record of 6-2-1 in home matches and helped forward Liberty Palmer become the third player in program history to earn the conference freshman of the year award. Cavallo's 2021 team posted a cumulative GPA of 3.67, the highest in the MSUB athletic department.
During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Cavallo guided a pair of MSUB players to first team Academic All-American honors while capturing 15 Academic All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selections in 2019. Cavallo's 2019 team also carried the sixth-highest team GPA among NCAA Division II schools.
Prior to being promoted to head coach at MSUB, he helped the 'Jackets to its third GNAC Championships appearance in the last four seasons in 2015 as an assistant. He also played an instrumental role in MSUB's runner-up finish in the GNAC in 2014 with an overall record of 11-4-2.
Before joining MSUB, Cavallo served as an assistant coach to the men's and women's soccer teams at Emory & Henry College. He also spent time as the goalkeeper coach at Belmont Abbey.
At the high school level, Cavallo was the head varsity boys' soccer coach at Allegany High School in Cumberland, Maryland. In two years at Allegany, his teams posted an overall 21-7-3 record. In 2012, Cavallo led Allegany to an undefeated regular season – the first in school history. Allegany also set school records for wins (15), consecutive wins (11), longest unbeaten streak (16 matches), goals scored in a season (71), fewest goals allowed in a season (5), and shutouts (12). For his efforts, Cavallo was selected the 2012 Pepsi-Cola High School Soccer Coach of the Year.
As a player, Cavallo played for two seasons at Warren Wilson College before transferring to Frostburg State University, where he was a two-year starter in goal. Cavallo holds a Class C License from the United States Soccer Federation and a bachelor's degree in geography from Frostburg State.
