Timmy Chang begins his fifth season on the Nevada coaching staff in 2021, and his first overseeing the Pack's wide-receiver corps after previously coaching the team's tight ends from 2018-20, and inside receivers in 2017.
Â
Chang was pivotal in engineering the breakout 2020 season of Cole Turner in Turner's transition from wide receiver to tight end. After catching just six passes for one touchdown over his first two seasons, Turner, under Chang's guidance, exploded for 49 catches for 605 yards and nine touchdowns, sharing the team and Mountain West lead, and ranking 12th in the country, in the latter category with teammate Romeo Doubs.
Turner was named to the All-Mountain West First Team, and established himself among the top tight ends in the country, ranking in the top 10 in the Mountain West with 67.2 receiving yards per game.
In 2019 Chang helped former tight end Trae Carter-Wells produce career receiving numbers in his final season, setting career highs in receptions and receiving yards. One of Chang’s other tight ends, Reagan Roberson, had arguably one of the biggest receptions of the season, an 11-yard catch and dive into the end zone to push Nevada to an overtime victory in the 2018 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl.
Â
In his first season he worked with the team’s inside receivers and developed McLane Mannix into a freshman All-America performer. During his rookie season, Mannix snagged 57 catches for 778 yards, notched six touchdowns and averaged 13.6 yards per catch. His 57 receptions were tied for second among freshmen wide receivers, he was fifth in receiving yards and fourth in receiving touchdowns. He produced three 100-yard receiving performances in his freshman season, including a season-high 150 receiving yards at Colorado State, ninth-highest in a single game by a Mountain West player.
Â
Chang came to Reno after spending the 2016 season as the offensive coordinator at Emory and Henry College. During his one season at the helm of the Wasps’ offense, Chang helped guide the team to a 6-4 record and had the offense ranked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in a multitude of categories including points per game (33.0) and yards per game (463.5).
Â
During the summer of 2016, Chang spent two weeks with the NFL's Buffalo Bills as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship Program, working with the quarterbacks during the OTA (Organized Team Activity) and training camp periods.
Â
Prior to Emory and Henry, Chang spent two seasons at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss. While with the Tigers, he served as both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He brought the run-and-shoot offense with him and directed JSU to lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference in multiple offensive categories and achieved national rankings in passing yardage, completions, completion percentage and total offense.
Â
Before Jackson State, Chang was an offensive assistant at Southern Methodist University under his collegiate head coach, June Jones in 2012 and 2013. He assisted in all aspects of the Mustangs’ offense including practice plans and scouting reports, primarily focusing on the SMU quarterbacks.
Â
Chang was a four-time All-Western Athletic Conference player at Hawai’i from 2000-04. He completed 1,388 of his 2,436 career passes for a 57.0 completion percentage, amassing 17,072 passing yards, 16,910 yards of total offense and 117 touchdowns. He held the NCAA Division I record for passing yardage, total offense, total completions, total attempts and total plays, two of which still stand. He was selected as the MVP of the 2003 Hawai’i Bowl and was the co-MVP of the 2004 Hawai’i Bowl. Chang was also a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
Â
After completing his collegiate career, Chang played professional football in the National Football League, Canadian Football League, and NFL Europe for four seasons. He retired from professional football in 2009 and returned to Hawai’i to complete his undergraduate degree in sports and fitness.
