SAN DIEGO -Â Nevada came back from a three-run deficit but fell in the ninth inning Friday at San Diego State, as the Aztecs got a walk-off grand slam from Jake Jackson to take the opener 7-3.
Jake Harvey got the Pack on the board with a two-run single in the top of the seventh, then
Jayce Dobie tied it up with a line drive into left-center to plate Harvey and make it 3-3.
It was the breakthrough the Pack needed against Aztec starter Rohan Lettow, who struck out 11 and allowed just four hits over 6.1 innings.
Nevada starter
Aidan Brainard battled on his end, striking out seven over five innings. Only one of the three runs Brainard allowed Friday was earned, as Wolf Pack errors in the first and third led to San Diego State's first two runs.
The first of those runs came with one out in the first. With runners at first and second, Jabin Trosky hit a grounder to
Sean Yamaguchi at third, but the setting sun over the third-base grandstand affected the vision of second baseman
Junhyuk Kwon, and the throw went into right field allowing Dawson Santana to score.
A fielding error in center by
Rominic Quiban allowed Zach Justice to take second to lead off the third. Despite Brainard striking out the next two batters, he could not escape the inning unscathed as Adam Magpoc singled up the middle for the second unearned run.
In the ninth, San Diego State (28-18, 11-5 MW) loaded the bases with none out against Wolf Pack reliever
Dominic Desch, setting up Jackson's walk-off grand slam for the win. Desch fell to 2-2 with the loss. For San Diego State, reliever Aidan Russell got his sixth win, striking out two and not allowing a hit over the final two frames.
Nevada (23-19, 12-7 MW) aims to even up the series Saturday at 5 p.m.
