LAS VEGAS — Nevada (36–16, 16–7 MW) dropped a 5–3 decision Thursday night against UNLV (29–20, 16–7 MW) at Eller Media Stadium for the first game of the Silver State series.
Both teams had a scoreless first inning before the Rebels struck first in the second. UNLV pushed across a run on a two‑out RBI single to take a 1–0 lead, then extended the margin to 3–0 in the third behind a leadoff single and a two‑run home run to right.
Nevada threatened in the fourth and fifth but couldn't break through, leaving runners in scoring position in both frames. The Pack finally broke through in the top of the sixth, stringing together four straight hits to pull even.
Haylee Engelbrecht led off with a single, followed by a double from
Hannah Di Genova to put two aboard. With that double, Di Genova set the new single-season total bases program record.
Katie Wetteland delivered an RBI single up the middle, and
Lexi O'Gorman followed with a two‑run double to tie the game at 3–3.
UNLV responded in bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5–3. Nevada put the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but the Rebels closed out the inning to secure the win.
Nevada will face UNLV tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the second game of the series.
