ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -Â Nevada got out to a hot start in Sunday's finale but the New Mexico bats woke up and delivered the Lobos a 9-7 comeback victory.
Mikey Cruz Jr. extended his hitting streak to 21 games and came up just a home run shy of the cycle in a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance. His RBI single opened the scoring in Nevada's four-run first, and he made it 5-0 in the second with a double to drive in
Jack Metcho.
New Mexico (23-15-1, 9-5-1 MW) stirred with two runs in the second and another in the third to cut into the Wolf Pack's lead. Then, in the fourth, trailing 6-3, the Lobos put up six to chase Nevada starter
Alessandro Castro and reliever
Jordan Giacomini and take the lead for good at 9-6.
Caleb Herd tripled to drive in Garrett Rede then came in on Khalil Walker's ground-rule double to right to get the Lobos within one at 6-5. After a groundout, Giacomini came on for Castro and New Mexico immediately tied it up on Karsen Waslefsky's RBI single.
Two walks loaded the bases before Luke Mansy's fly ball to left plated Waslefsky with the go-ahead run. Batting around, Rede added a two-run single off of
Luke Schat to cap the scoring in the frame. Rede led the Lobos with three hits and two RBIs on the day, while Mansy and Lenny Junior Ashby each hit a homer.
Nevada managed to get one back in the fifth, when Cruz tripled then scored on
Jacob Doyle's fly ball to right. Doyle drove in two runs on the day, while
Junhyuk Kwon doubled twice and
Rominic Quiban went 2-for-4.
But New Mexico reliever Cooper Corkrean was steady after taking over for Lobo starter Diego Alvarez to begin the third. Corkrean held the Pack to two runs over five innings and improved to 5-0 with the win. Giacomini took the loss to fall to 3-3, giving up three runs over a third of an inning.
Nevada (21-15, 10-5 MW) got a runner to second with less than two outs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but Corkrean in the seventh and Luke Wiseman in the eighth each got out of their respective situation. Talor Grubbs finished off the ninth for his fourth save.
Nevada returns to Reno for a five-game home stand beginning Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. against Saint Mary's.
