LP: Alessandro Castro (2-2)
PULLMAN, Wash. - Nevada dropped Friday night's series opener at Washington State, 12-6.
The Cougars (11-13, 5-2 MW) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first and led 9-1 through two, putting the Wolf Pack (14-9, 4-3 MW) into too deep a hole.
The Pack got a highlight with
Jacob Doyle's team-leading eighth homer, a solo job in the fourth, but the Cougs held Nevada at bay the rest of the way.
Washington State manufactured itself a quick 4-0 lead in the first, getting a bunt single, a single to shallow left and a walk to load the bases against Nevada starter
Alessandro Castro. Matt Priest's infield single followed by a sacrifice fly from Ollie Obenour and a squeeze bunt from Ryan Skjonsby put three across. A second squeeze bunt completed the scoring as the Cougs issued pinprick after pinprick to the Pack.
Castro exited with one out in the second after Washington State added five more, and fell to 2-2.
Doyle went 2-for-5 with the solo homer, while
Mikey Cruz Jr. doubled twice in four at-bats.
Lee Matsuzaki and
Jake Harvey each drove in two runs.
Coug starter Nick Lewis improved to 3-1 going seven innings and allowing just four runs (three earned). Despite only two of their hits going for extra bases, the Cougs were led by Priest's three-hit, four-RBI night.
Nevada will try to even the series Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
