PULLMAN, Wash. - Nevada evened the weekend series at Washington State as
Mahiro Tomita and two Wolf Pack relievers silenced Cougar bats over the final six innings in a 5-4 win.
The teams will play for the series Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
Tomita picked up his first win of the season, bouncing back from a three-run first inning to put up zeroes through the sixth. On the day he struck out two and gave up just three runs.
Ryan Oakes pitched into the eighth before
Andres Castro took over. Castro got the Pack out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the eighth, getting Kyler Northrop to fly out to center. In the ninth, after
Jayce Dobie's solo shot made it 5-3 Nevada, the Cougs got a run and had the tying run at second before Castro nailed down the save by getting Ollie Obenour to line out to third.
The Pack (15-9, 5-2 MW) chipped away at the early three-run deficit, beginning with
Mikey Cruz Jr.'s RBI double in the second.
It was a three-run third which proved the difference. Three-straight hits to open the frame quickly tied the game, as
Jack Metcho's leadoff double led to
Rominic Quiban's RBI single followed by an RBI doible to right-center from Dobie. Dobie led the Pack with two hits and two RBIs on the day.
Three batters later,
Sean Yamaguchi came through with a two-out single through the left side, plating Dobie with the go-ahead run.
Tomita settled in from there, closing his outing with a clutch sixth inning in which he struck out Noah Thein then got Dustin Robinson to fly to left with runners at second and third.
