RENO, Nev. - Nevada came all the way back from an early six-run deficit, but Air Force had the final say, stealing Sunday's rubber game, 17-12.
Nevada (13-8, 4-2 MW) scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-8 lead, with a go-ahead RBI single from
Jayce Dobie and a two-run single from
Jacob Doyle.
But Air Force (9-13, 5-1 MW) capitalized on the Wolf Pack bullpen, drawing six walks and stealing four bases from the sixth to the eighth innings to take a 16-11 lead. The Falcon rally started in the sixth, when two walks and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. That led to a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout cutting the Pack lead to one at 11-10.
The seventh is when Air Force took control. Luke Elmore's leadoff single was followed by two walks from reliever
Aiden Pollock, loading the bases with none out. With
Nik Miller now on the mound, pinch-hitter Cole Jenkins blooped a single to shallow left, tying the game. Kayden Bradshaw's sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run then Ben Niednagel drove in another run with a double. Walker Zapp's sacrifice fly capped the four-run inning with Air Force ahead, 14-11. The Falcons added two more in the eighth for insurance.
Sam Hentges got the win in relief for Air Force, giving up just one run over 2.1 innings. He paired with Marcus Downing then Easton Miller to hold Nevada to one run on four hits over the final 4.1 innings.
Pollock gave up three runs on one hit with two walks, falling to 0-1. Nevada starter
Jordan Giacomini lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits with four walks. Reliever
Eric Valdez was a bright spot, coming on for Giacomini and holding things down for 3.1 innings and giving up just two runs to facilitate the Pack's comeback. Overall, Wolf Pack pitchers issued 12 walks Sunday.
At the plate,
Jackson Waller went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while
Jayce Dobie homered and drove in three runs in a 3-for-4 day. On the day, Nevada outhit the Falcons, 16-14.
Air Force was led by matching 3-for-6, four-RBI days from Wyatt Hanoian and Tripp Garrish, with the latter adding a solo homer. Walker also drove in three runs.
Nevada closes the five-game homestand Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. against San Francisco before traveling to the Palouse for a three-game conference series at Washington State.
