DAVIS, Calif. -Â After combining for 12 runs over the first three innings, Nevada and UC Davis put up zeroes the rest of the way Saturday. But it was the Aggies who benefitted, taking the weekend series with a 7-5 win.
The Wolf Pack (3-5) started quick with five runs in the opening frame. Three-straight singles led to
Sean Yamaguchi's bases-loaded walk and an early 1-0 lead. A fielder's choice then a one-out error on the Aggies led to two more runs, then
Jackson Waller delivered a two-run double to give Nevada what appeared to be a comfortable 5-0 lead.
But UC Davis (5-4) wasted little time cutting into the Nevada lead. It took just three batters for the Aggies to get within two, as Evan Gentil followed Zach Story's walk and Tyler Howard's single with a three-run homer.
It was Gentil again in the second, this time with a bases-loaded walk to make it a one-run game and set up Jaxon Murphy's go-ahead double off of Wolf Pack starter
Aidan Brainard. That spelled the end of the night for Brainard, who took his first loss of the season lasting just 1.1 innings and giving up six runs on five hits.
Gentil led the Aggies with four RBIs, going 1-for-3 Saturday.
A bright spot for the Wolf Pack bullpen came with
Ryan Oakes' outing. Oakes, coming on for Brainard, steadied the ship by going 5.2 innings of one-run ball and striking out five.
But the Wolf Pack offense was quieted after its five-run first. Aggie starter Keenan Anzai settled down, not giving up a hit over the next three innings as he struck out eight in a four-inning outing. Anzai gave way to Tyler Wood, who struck out four over the next 2.1 innings to pick up his first win.
Jayce Dobie went 3-for-4 for the Pack, putting himself in scoring position in the fifth and seventh innings, then drawing a two-out walk in the ninth to keep the game alive. But the Pack could not crack the Aggie bullpen, as Rowen Barnes shut the door in the ninth for his third save.
Nevada will try to avert a sweep in Sunday's 1 p.m. finale.
