Oxford, Miss. - Oxford University Stadium/Swayze Field
WP:Â Tayloe Rabe (1-0)
LP:Â
Alessandro Castro (0-1)
OXFORD, Miss. -Â Nevada endured a similar ordeal in Saturday's second game of its weekend series at Ole Miss as it did in Friday's opener. The Wolf Pack put runners on base and consistently threatened to break out, but the big hit never materialized as Ole Miss outlasted Nevada for the 5-1 series-clinching win.
The Pack (0-2) had at least one runner in scoring position with none out in both the second and third innings but could come away with just one run overall. That run came in the second, when, trailing 1-0, the Pack got a leadoff single from
Junhyuk Kwon and a double from
Billy Ham before Kwon came across on
Jackson Waller's one-out fly ball to center. Ham reached third on the play, but Ole Miss starter Cade Townsend was able to strike out
Jacob Doyle to end the frame.
Ole Miss (2-0) hit three homers off of Wolf Pack starter
Alessandro Castro, the second of those a two-run shot from Tristan Bissetta in the bottom of the second which put the Rebels up for good at 3-1.
Rominic Quiban continued his strong debut weekend with a double to lead off the third, but again Townsend escaped further damage. Even though
Jayce Dobie reached first on a passed-ball third strike to put runners at the corners with one out, Townsend struck out
Sean Yamaguchi and Kwon to keep the Pack down two.
The Rebels got runs in the fourth on a Tate Sirmans solo shot and in the sixth on an RBI single from Bissetta to up the lead to 5-1. Nevada's last threat came in the top of the eighth when one-out singles from Yamaguchi and Dobie put two on. But Ole Miss reliever Taylor Rabe got a double-play ball to short from Kwon to escape another trouble spot.
Rabe got the win for Ole Miss, going 3.1 scoreless innings in relief and striking out three. Both starters, Castro and Townsend, went 4.2 innings, with Castro allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and Townsend striking out eight while giving up a run on four hits.
Seven Wolf Pack batters accounted for the team's seven hits, with Ham and Quiban each with a double. Bissetta went 2-for-4 with his homer and three RBIs while Jedd Utermark added a solo shot, and Sirmans went 2-for-4 with a double and his solo homer.
The teams close the series Sunday at 11:30 a.m. PT.
